PSV Eindhoven striker Luuk de Jong has joked about following new Everton Director of Football, Marcel Brands, to Goodison Park.
The Toffees announced the arrival of the Dutchman to their backroom staff on Wednesday when they also confirmed the sacking of Sam Allardyce, and with a new era about to begin on Merseyside, incomings are expected over the course of the summer.
Everton may well look to make additions to their strike force ahead of the new campaign, especially were Wayne Rooney to make his much touted move to the MLS.
They would be left with Cenk Tosun, Oumar Niasse and Dominic Calvert-Lewin as senior players in a central forward role, and usually managers like more options than that at their disposal going into a busy season.
De Jong is said to have interest from other clubs, which will be music to the ears of Toffees fans if the disastrous spell that the striker had at Newcastle a few seasons ago is anything to go by.
Thankfully for them the 27-year-old appeared to be joking when bringing up Everton when he was commenting on where he sees his future.
“I have no idea yet, there is certainly interest from other clubs, and if there is something beautiful that suits me, I would certainly consider it,” Voetbal Primeur quote him as saying.
“But I’m really enjoying it at PSV, it’s not like I have to leave. Certainly not. Maybe [Brands] can get me to Everton,” he added ‘with a wink’.
While de Jong did not set the house on fire at St James’ Park, he does have a pretty good record in the Dutch Eredivisie in the main. He notched 59 goals in 123 appearances for FC Twente where he made a name for himself and he is closing in on 100 strikes for PSV Eindhoven too.
Given the disaster that his time at Newcastle became, where he failed to score in 12 outings, there may well be a fair few Evertonians who hope the Dutchman really is joking when he spoke about following the new Director of Football to Goodison.
