Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has left out Daniel Candeias ahead of their Europa League qualifier on Tuesday evening, according to BBC Sport.

The Gers winger is a surprise omission from the 22-man squad named ahead of their clash with St Joseph’s in Gibraltar.

Candeias played a key role under Gerrard last season, making 52 appearances and scoring six goals as they finished second in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers were required to name eight ‘locally trained’ players in their squad, meaning those developed in Scotland, and four players developed at the club.

With Gers unable to fill that quota, their squad was shortened from 25 to 22, which explains Candeias not being named for their first competitive fixture of the season.

Gerrard’s squad does contain all of his summer signings though, with a number of debuts expected, while he is without Jon Flanagan due to injury.

Jamie Murphy is also sidelined for Rangers, with a number of players expected to depart Ibrox being left out of the trip to Gibraltar.

That includes Ryan Hardie and Glenn Middleton, who are set to leave the club on loan deals during the current transfer window.

Gerrard has no place for Graham Dorrans, Jason Holt, Joe Dodoo, Eros Grezda and Kyle Lafferty in his squad, with all five players currently out of favour at Rangers.

The full Rangers squad for their Europa League qualifier is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Allan McGregor, Wes Foderingham, Jak Alnwick

Defenders: James Tavernier, George Edmundson, Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic, Matt Polster, Borna Barisic

Midfielders: Ryan Jack, Steven Davis, Sheyi Ojo, Andy Halliday, Glen Kamara, Greg Docherty, Greg Stewart, Scott Arfield

Forwards: Jordan Jones, Alfredo Morelos, Jake Hastie, Joe Aribo, Jermain Defoe
