Jermain Defoe is enjoying a brilliant start to the season with Rangers, as he aims to help fire the club to the Scottish Premiership title.
The 37-year-old has been a revelation for Steven Gerrard’s side since joining back in January, despite being second choice to Alfredo Morelos.
Even though Defoe is the second choice striker at Rangers, he is currently the top scorer in Scotland with nine goals to his name.
That includes a hat-trick in their 5-0 demolition of Hamilton, which sent Gers top of the league and two points ahead of rivals Celtic.
Defoe is currently part-way through an 18-month deal with Rangers, having joined on loan from Premier League outfit Bournemouth.
Reports suggest that his parent club could recall him in January, however the striker’s former teammate Alan Hutton claims that will not be the case.
“I can’t see Jermain going back to Bournemouth, that’s not what he wants,” Hutton told Football Insider. “He’s a guy that obviously I’ve known a long time he’s loving it up there.
“He loves scoring goals, he loves football and I knew as soon as he went there, this guy’s a superstar and he’s going to score goals.
“He amazes me how good he still is. He will want to be a Rangers legend.
“If you’re a striker and you’re scoring goals you are going to enjoy it. It’s not that far away from down south so I think he’s a great addition to the squad and he can really, if he wants, he can play as long as he likes.”
Defoe has scored 12 goals in all competitions for Rangers from his 14 appearances this season, and is relishing his time with the club.
The former England international is determined to help Gers end Celtic’s hopes of a ninth straight title triumph, and will be hoping Bournemouth give him the opportunity to do so.
