According to Teesside Live, Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing is interesting Glasgow Rangers.
The Gers are expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer as Steven Gerrard looks to end Celtic’s dominance over Scottish football.
Reported Rangers target Downing’s career started at his local club Middlesbrough. He went to Sunderland on loan, then signed for Aston Villa, Liverpool, West Ham and back to where it all began at Boro.
He also made 35 appearances for England starting in 2005 and his last squad place was in 2014, as a 29-year-old against Slovenia and Scotland.
In two seasons at Liverpool he appeared in 91 games and scored seven goals for the Anfield giants, playing alongside his captain Gerrard, before transferring to West Ham.
In his last four successful seasons at Middlesbrough he played 160 games and scored 10 goals, which includes 34 games in the Premier League.
Allan McGregor, Jermain Defoe and Steve Davis have proven to Rangers boss Gerrard that if you have true ability, your age becomes less important.
If Gerrard decides to sign Downing for Rangers, could it make a difference to his ambition by turning his nearlymen into a team of title winners.
Downing is not intended to be a long-term prospect, but next season is so demanding for Gerrard to win something, that his skill and ability to make those passes could work.
The attacker has just become a free agent after playing 40 times for Boro this season, with 38 of those coming in the EFL Championship.
With Defoe already at Ibrox, it’s easy to see why Gerrard wants to snap up Downing, who knows how to supply the right type of passes for the striker to score more often.
Gerrard could see Downing being a terrific free transfer signing, and while he might not have been sensational last season, he should be great in the SPFL.
On a reputed £35,000-per-week, will Downing be prepared to take a pay cut to join his ex-team mate Gerrard to help make Rangers great again, and win some silverware?
If he could continue to produce waltzing past players and cutting through the opposing defenders, Downing would become Gerrard’s game changer?
Downing may also have an impact on the academy youngsters at the Hummel Training Centre. He could help them with their development.
