Rangers are a step closer to the Europa League group stages after their 3-1 win over NK Maribor at Ibrox last night – much to the delight of their fans.

Goals from Alfredo Morelos, James Tavernier and Lassana Coulibaly secured victory although the tie was still level at half-time thanks to a fine strike from Mitja Viler five minutes before the break.

The home side were quickly into their stride and led inside 10 minutes only to be pegged back.

Rangers made their class pay in the second half, however, when Tavernier slotted home a penalty to restore their advantage.

Coulibaly netted four minutes from time to add some gloss to the night’s performance and put them in control of the tie.

It was a day to remember for Rangers fans, many of whom declared themselves happy with manager Steven Gerrard’s efforts in the transfer window to overhaul the squad.

On the night, supporters took to Twitter to praise the performances of the goalscorers with Morelos in particular coming in for plenty of praise.

He reacted quickest to score the opening goal from close range and then – depending on your viewpoint – was either fouled or made the most of contact in the box to earn Rangers’ second via the penalty spot.

Morelos also had a goal disallowed for offside in the first half and almost made contact with the ball before Coulibaly did to make the game safe in the closing moments.

It was some performance from the Colombian, who was sent off after just 12 minutes of Rangers’ league opener against Aberdeen at the weekend – although that card has now been rescinded.

This was much more like it and fans thoroughly enjoyed the way he made life difficult for the Maribor defenders all night.

Here is a selection of their tweets.
