Last Wednesday night, Rangers should have beaten Hibs in a 0-0 stalemate because they did manage to play well throughout, but simply couldn’t put the ball in the opponents’ net.
Steven Gerrard’s men had a bit of luck on their side against Tommy Wright’s St Johnstone side on Sunday, with a late strike confirming a 2-1 victory in Perth.
Consistency, bad refereeing decisions and suspensions have all added the Ibrox club’s problems this season.
Alfredo Morelos is a great centre forward, but the Rangers attacker is a marked man with opponents and referees, due to the attitude shown by the wayward Colombian star.
If Rangers are to win the title this year, a lot will depend on who they and Celtic sign during the January transfer window.
Personally, I would try and sell Wes Foderingham to help fund a move for key attacking transfer targets.
There is undoubtedly a competitive title race this season, and much more than any others in the last six years
Very few Celtic fans will admit it out loud, but they know deep down that this year the SPFL has Glasgow Rangers, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and Hearts, who can take points off of the Hoops.
Ex-Celtic legend Chris Sutton think as much, writing the following in his Daily Record column.
“If the club don’t act in January they could see themselves surrendering the Premiership to their fiercest rivals,” he said.
“If Rangers bring in someone of the quality of Dominic Solanke from Liverpool, while Celtic sit around doing nothing it will come back to bite the Bhoys.
“The need for a new frontman or two is glaringly obvious at Parkhead. With Leigh Griffiths shelved indefinitely. Odsonne Edouard is the only senior striker at the club.
“He needs some support because he cannot do it all himself. It’s imperative that Rodgers be given the funds to strengthen his team, in both defence and attack.
“If not they could find themselves without title silverware come the end of the season.”
As such, it may well be that the Glasgow side that bolsters their respective attack mid-season is the one that has the required firepower to top the table come May.
