Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has told Vurnon Anita and Yoan Gouffran to “forget about your futures” until talks with owner Mike Ashley have taken place.
The senior duo are out of contracts at the end of next month but have been told to wait and see if they will get a chance to play in the Premier League next season.
Contract talks with both players were put on hold back in November while Newcastle attempted to secure promotion.
The pair have been integral in the Magpies’ victorious campaign this season, proving themselves to be key members of Benitez’s squad.
However, the former Liverpool manager has revealed to the twosome to forget about their immediate futures as a meeting with owner Mike Ashley needs to take place first.
“I am trying to stop speculation about players because if we have a meeting and we talk about this or that, then it has an influence on players,” The Chronicle quote the Newcastle boss as saying.
“I told them the other day: ‘Forget about your future’, short term, because we have to play this game, and then next week I will meet the owner and then we will talk about what’s going on and then you will know after the meeting because before the meeting I can say nothing.”
Newcastle won the Championship on the final day of the regular campaign by beating Barnsley 3-0.
