Sunderland’s injury plagued season may well have taken another of David Moyes’ men after star Jordan Pickford suffered a knee problem during the Black Cats’ 3-1 defeat at Manchester United on Boxing Day.

The 22-year-old appeared to take a knock in a collision with team-mate Papy Djilobodji as the pair unsuccessfully tried to prevent Zlatan Ibrahimovic from notching the Red Devils’ second of the game.

The 28-year-old defender slid to try and block the giant Swede’s shot and came into contact with the England under-21 international who seemed to clutch his leg in the aftermath.

Even though the local lad managed to complete the 90 minutes at Old Trafford, the Sunderland Echo report that the club’s backroom staff are now assessing the extent of the damage caused by the impact.

The Black Cats boss will be mindful that midfielder Paddy McNair played for more than 45 minutes with a knee problem earlier this campaign that has ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

Anything but the all-clear may prove disastrous for Moyes in his attempt to resuscitate Sunderland’s season – after numerous man of the match displays has seen the shot-stopper earn his side several vital points.

If the young custodian was to be sidelined, the North East club could turn to back-up Vito Mannone who was initially replaced by Pickford as number one after picking up an elbow injury earlier this term.
