Tottenham Hotspur will definitely be without midfielder Harry Winks against Ajax tomorrow, but Jan Vertonghen will play, reports Football.London.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino confirmed the early team news for the first leg of the club’s Champions League semi-final at their new stadium in his press conference following Saturday’s 1-0 Premier League defeat to West Ham United.
After discussing the game against the Hammers the Tottenham boss was asked about whether Moussa Sissoko, Vertonghen and Winks would be fit to take on the Dutch side.
“Vertonghen for sure,” he said.
“Sissoko? I don’t know – we will have to assess tomorrow.
“I think Harry Winks – no.”
The England international has not played for Spurs for more than a month now after suffering a groin injury, leaving the club short of midfield options at times.
Sissoko has a similar problem but at least the return of central defender Vertonghen is a positive for Tottenham fans.
The Belgium international played no part in the match against West Ham as Pochettino rotated his squad with Tuesday’s game in mind.
Tottenham stalwart Vertonghen missed the game with muscle fatigue but will take his place again against Ajax on Tuesday.
With Serge Aurier, Harry Kane and Erik Lamela still on the sidelines, Spurs will be happy to be able to count on his considerable experience.
Tottenham’s defeat to West Ham was their at home first since moving into their new home in North London and they were given three days to recover before the Ajax game.
Pochettino being able to bring in players who are fresh and fully fit could be vital to Spurs’ chances of progressing.
