Axel Tuanzebe has suggested to The Birmingham Mail that he had the chance to join Aston Villa on loan from Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

Tuanzebe spent the second half of the 2017-18 campaign on loan at Villa from Premier League giants United.

The central defender returned to Villa Park on a season-long loan deal in the summer of 2018, and helped Dean Smith’s side clinch promotion to the Premier League from the Championship via the playoffs.

The 21-year-old English youngster has suggested that Villa wanted him on loan again for the 2019-20 campaign, but he decided against it.

Tuanzebe told The Birmingham Mail: “You realise, when you step back, it’s not all about nice play and ensuring you get the three points – it becomes more of a shift.

“I learnt a lot to grind the battles and understand what you have to do to ensure you win.

“Staying here was the better option for me. I had glimpses of the first team at United when I was 19, but now I’m 21 there’s a clearer pathway of where myself, and the team, want to be.

“The plan is in place and tomorrow is a stepping stone to reaching the bigger goal. It’s an opportunity for me to express myself so that’s why I want to deliver.”

Good decision?

Tuanzebe is only 21 years of age, and he needs to be in and around Manchester United for him to have a future at the club.

A loan spell away from Old Trafford would not been very productive in terms of his long-term future at the Red Devils.

According to WhoScored, the 21-year-old has played just a minute in the Premier League for United so far this season.
