‘Phenomenal’, ‘Immense’ – These Arsenal fans praise ‘class’ individual for performance vs Olympiacos

Arsenal were on the receiving end of a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat to Olympiacos on Thursday night as they were dumped out of the Europa League in the final minute of extra time, but fans still found time to praise Granit Xhaka for his efforts.

The Gunners found themselves heading into the additional 30 minutes of play when they could not find a reply to Pape Alou Cisse’s 53rd-minute goal.

Mikel Arteta’s side had Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to thank for bringing the tie level and putting them in position to progress to the next stage, however the Gabon international’s terrible miss moments later was punished in the most brutal of ways.

Youssef El-Arabi poked the ball past Bernd Leno with just minutes to go to give the Greek outfit the win and their place in the Europa League hat.

Whilst there will have been some rather extremely disappointed and shocked fans in the stands and at home, however some still took to Twitter to share their praise for Xhaka after his performance.

According to the data collected by WhoScored, the 27-year-old was heavily involved in the game and was handed a match rating of 7.19. He had four attempts at goal, played one key pass, won five aerial duels, completed 90.9% of his passes, made one tackle and one interception whilst also having made three clearances.

Some fans stated that they felt he was one of the only ones that could come away from the game pleased with what he put in, whilst others felt he deserved more plaudits than he was being handed by some sections of the Arsenal fanbase on Twitter.

Here are just some of what the club faithful had to say…
