Former Sunderland and England full-back Michael Gray believes Gareth Bale would a perfect fit for the current Tottenham Hotspur team.
Bale left Spurs for Real Madrid in 2013 for a then world record fee of £85million but injuries and loss of form has seen the Wales international fall out of favour under Zinedine Zidane and the Madrid seem prepared to cut their losses.
Manchester United have been linked with the winger for some time but Tottenham are hoping to persuade the Welshman to return to North London where he spent six years from 2007-2013.
However, Bale still has three years left on his bumper contract at the Bernabeu and intends to see out ruling out a possible return to the Premier League.
But Gray believes that Tottenham fans would be excited to see the winger back plying his trade in the famous white shirt.
“Tottenham fans will be absolutely licking their lips if he can go back to play for Spurs, they would absolutely love it,” he said to Jim White on TalkSport (14/05/2019 at 10:45 pm).
“You’re talking about a World Class player making their team better than they already are. Taking them to that next level.”
Bale turns 30 in July and while many Tottenham fans would welcome him back with open arms, he doesn’t necessarily fit the club’s transfer policy of signing young players who have potential.
Spurs, of course, are in the Champions League final where they face Liverpool on June 1 and to build on taking the club to the next level, adding such a world-class talent would enhance their prospects as Gray continued.
“When you think Tottenham have got Champions League football next season and they are in the Champions League final now. Absolutely.
“Forget about his age, I think Man United have to go down a different avenue. They are four or five years away from challenging again, maybe even longer than that.
“But Bale is perfect for a club like Spurs. If there is an option in England and in the Premier League, I think Tottenham tops that list in the sides that want him. Everyone would want a Bale.”
