Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Tottenham Hotspur are too strong for Everton and is backing Mauricio Pochettino’s men to claim all three Premier League points on Saturday.
Spurs have lost just one of their last eight Premier League games but struggled in their most recent game to break down West Ham United at Wembley and it took them more than an hour to finally get past AFC Wimbledon’s resolve in the FA Cup last weekend.
Despite this, Merson is predicting Tottenham to win comfortably and suggests a scoreline of 2-0 to the north London side.
“Spurs struggled at home to West Ham and it took them a while to break down AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup.” Merson told Sky Sports.
“But I think they will have too much for an Everton side who are going to sit back and play tight. It has worked for them in the past, but they don’t have enough pace on the counter to hurt Tottenham.”
Tottenham put three past the Toffees at Goodison Park in September as Harry Kane scored either side of Christian Eriksen’s strike.
Everton sacked Ronald Koeman in October and turned to former England manager Sam Allardyce, who has made them more difficult to beat, but the Merseyside club have not won in their last four Premier League games and they were dumped out of the FA Cup by neighbours Liverpool a week ago.
A win for Tottenham could potentially move them back into the Champions League places should Pochettino’s men put four or more past the Toffees without reply.
Meanwhile, Everton are likely to stay ninth in the Premier League table should they get a result but could drop once place should Watford bag three points at home to Southampton.
Pochettino takes his Spurs side to his former club Southampton on January 21 before taking on Newport County in the FA Cup a week later. Tottenham finish the month by hosting Manchester United at Wembley on January 31.
