Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has predicted that Liverpool will have too much firepower for Manchester United in the North West derby on Monday night.

The former Arsenal midfielder believes the Reds will beat United 3-1 in the Premier League game being dubbed Red Monday across the media.

“I don’t think Man United will be able to live with Liverpool’s attacking players and if the hosts start quickly they will have too much at Anfield,” Merson wrote in his prediction piece on Sky Sports.

“I’m not sure Jose Mourinho knows his best team yet and he needs to get that sorted. They played well for 20 minutes against Stoke, but for a large part of that game they didn’t look like scoring.

“Considering the way Liverpool press high, I think Man Utd will struggle to open the game up.”

Liverpool have started the new season in blistering form, with a defeat away to Burnley the open blot on Jurgen Klopp’s copybook so far this season.

The Reds have also beaten both Chelsea and Arsenal on the road, with the Kop hoping that victory over their age-old rivals here will be a real statement of the team’s ability to challenge for the Premier League trophy this season.

United have been inconsistent so far under Mourinho but undoubtedly have the talent in their squad to go to Merseyside and return with a result.

The game will be as passionate as always, with the victor laying down an early season marker with three points against a fellow top-four rival.
