Southampton head into the international break with a 4-1 loss to Chelsea at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon, and after the match their fans were quick to jump on the man they identified as a scapegoat.

Saints have been up against it defensively for a while now, and they certainly didn’t cover themselves in glory against Frank Lampard’s men, who as good as they were, probably still had gears they could go through if they had needed to.

Southampton were behind early on when Tammy Abraham gave the Blues the lead before Mason Mount doubled the advantage. Danny Ings pulled one back for the Hampshire outfit but N’Golo Kante’s deflected effort put the Londoners 3-1 up at the break.

Michy Batshuayi came off the bench in the second-half to rub salt into the Saints’ wounds and make it 4-1 late on, on a thoroughly disappointing afternoon fr the home side.

It all began with the Abraham goal, a strike in which Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn failed to cover himself in glory it has to be said.

He was hesitant to come out to collect a through ball, and by the time the Saints stopper made his mind up to go the England under-21 international had beaten him to the pass, and was presented with a simple lob to open the scoring.

Gunn has been questioned by the Southampton fans a few times recently, after a series of indifferent performances in a position which has been a troublesome one for the St Mary’s Stadium outfit for quite some time.

It would appear that most Saints supporters have seen enough of the former Manchester City goalkeeper though, and want him removed from the side before he does any more damage to their chances of remaining in the top flight.
