Newcastle United have been offered the chance to sign Swansea City winger Jefferson Montero according to The Northern Echo.
Rafael Benitez is said to have shown his appreciation for the Ecuador international and was linked with him in January and now appears to have the opportunity to land his man.
It has been one of the worst kept secrets of the summer that the Magpies boss has been eager to strengthen his attacking unit at St James’ Park but as yet Christian Atsu is the only forward who has joined in this window.
In recent weeks the likes of Adama Traore and Jesus Navas have been linked with a move to Newcastle although the proposed £15 million Middlesbrough are demanding for the former is said to have negated any chance of that deal taking place.
With him being priced out of the market for the lightning fast winger, Benitez could turn his attentions back to the Swansea man who it is believed who he could pick up for as little as £4 million with Montero entering the final year of his contract at the Liberty Stadium.
The 27-year-old is famed for his willingness to take on and go past his man and it is that sort of excitement that the Spaniard is looking to add to his squad at St James’ as he looks to keep the club in the Premier League in their first season back.
Montero missed much of the previous campaign due to a hamstring injury. That meant he could only make 14 appearances in all competitions with most of those coming from the substitutes bench.
He will be looking to contribute a lot more in the upcoming season whether he remains in Wales or makes the switch to Tyneside.
