Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has revealed why Kenedy did not play during his club’s FA Cup third round encounter against Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday – and the reasons are rather surprising.
As quoted by The Chronicle, Benitez said: “He had a problem with his nail and the reality is he cannot put the boots on – as soon as he puts the boots on, he is feeling pain.
“He is getting better and I think in one or two days he will be OK.”
The Brazilian also missed the Magpies loss against Chelsea in the Premier League last weekend but this is because he is on loan from the Blues.
Newcastle are currently in trouble in the Premier League following their defeat against Maurizio Sarri’s side. They are now in 18th position on the standings and in the relegation zone with 18 points from 22 games.
They are also experiencing something of an injury crisis. The likes of Mo Diame, Paul Dummett and Jonjo Shelvey all face a race against time to be fit for Saturday’s game against Cardiff City.
Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles also picked up knocks in Newcastle’s clash against Rovers.
The game against Cardiff will be an important one for Benitez’s side and it is one from which they can get three points.
The Bluebirds are just one point ahead of Newcastle on the standomgs and as such the north east outfit will be desperate for victory.
A victory for the Magpies will take them out of the bottom three.
DeAndre Yedlin, Florian Lejeune and Martin Dubravka are all expected to make a return for Benitez’s Newcastle side after being rested for the last game against Rovers.
It remains to be seen whether Kenedy will be involved, with the Newcastle fans yet to see the Brazilian at his best this season.
