Newcastle United are reportedly considering a move for English striker Danny Welbeck, according to a report published by The Mirror.
The injury prone player has had to miss the majority of this season due to a serious ankle injury and the report claimed that he is currently in the process of discussing a potential new deal with the Arsenal hierarchy.
Welbeck’s current deal with the Gunners is due to expire at the end of the season. Due to his experience at the highest level, he is likely to not be short of potential suitors should be become a free-agent, with Newcastle reportedly joined by Everton and West Ham as interested parties.
As things stand, there is no sense in the 28-year-old opting to remain at the Emirates Stadium.
He may want to join a new club, like Newcastle, in order to ensure more regular playing time. As things stand, he is below Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette in the Gunners pecking order.
As he is now at the peak of his career, Welbeck will not get any better as a player. He is not a first-choice player under Unai Emery and it is really unlikely that he will be anything more than a squad rotation player should he remain with the Gunners.
If he were to join Newcastle, he could get regular playing time. The Magpies have really struggled up front this season and need to bring in more experienced players to their squad who can help them to score and set up goals.
Due to his experience and clinical finishing ability, Welbeck could be a worthwhile signing for Newcastle.
