Newcastle United kicked off pre-season in perfect fashion on Friday night as Rafa Benitez’s side defeated Scottish outfit Heart of Midlothian 2-1.

Much has been made of the Magpies lack of progress in the transfer market this summer, with many fans desperate for the club to recruit a proven Premier League striker.

However, it was a centre forward already at the club that stole the limelight north of the border as number nine Dwight Gayle grabbed a quickfire brace.

The former Crystal Palace man proved he was far too good for the Championship last season, scoring an impressive 20 goals by December.

Injuries played a big part in the predatory forward not continuing that vein of form in 2017, but Gayle is back to full fitness and firing once again.

The striker was never given the chance at the Eagles to show what he could do in the Premier League, despite holding a great scoring rate from the bench at Selhurst Park.

Newcastle recognised that, brought the player north and are reaping the benefits – much to the delight of the Geordie faithful.

Ahead of the upcoming 2017-18 Premier League season, Gayle will be given the opportunity to show that he can score consistently in the top flight.

Newcastle will need a striker that can net regularly to keep them competitive against England’s elite and as such their reliance on the former Palace man is currently high.

While the Toon following will be hoping that Benitez can find another attacker to take some of the goalscoring responsibilities off his shoulders, the fact that he is fit and firing in pre-season can only be a good thing.

Here are the best tweets from the Newcastle fans regarding Gayle’s performance against Hearts.
