Newcastle United announced that they have completed the permanent signing of midfielder Mikel Merino from Borussia Dortmund on Friday, and their fans have taken to social media to celebrate the news.

The Spanish player has been on loan at St James’ Park this season, and has made such a big impression at the club that Rafael Benitez wasted no time in tying the playmaker down to a five-year deal.

As part of the original agreement which brought Merino to Tyneside, there was an option to make the switch a permanent one, something Newcastle were quick to activate.

The move, which is for an undisclosed fee, was a perfect way for the weekend to begin for Magpies fans, as they prepare to see their side in action for the first time in two weeks, when Newcastle make the lengthy trip to Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

The 21-year-old will be looking to build on a very encouraging start to his career on Tyneside. He has featured in all seven of his team’s Premier League matches this season.

The permanent deal rounded off a very good week for Merino, who scored the opening goal for Spain under-21s earlier in the week in a 4-1 thrashing of Slovakia under-21s.

He is yet to find the back of the net for the Magpies, but as he continues to grow and grow in the league, that first strike is unlikely to take long to arrive.

Having signed permanently with the club, he will be looking to crown off his big week with an eye catching performance at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday.

Merino took to Twitter to display his delight in making his long-term future in Newcastle, and he was greeted with an avalanche of celebratory messages from fans who are overjoyed that the midfielder will be theirs for the next five years.

  1. If you were an actual Newcastle fan, or even knew one, you’d know this was not in the least bit unexpected, and has been talked about for weeks.
