Newcastle United fans on Twitter gave their reactions as the Magpies secured promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking last night.

Two goals from Ayoze Perez, one from Christian Atsu and a penalty from Matt Ritchie gave Rafael Benitez’s side a 4-1 win over Preston North End at St James’ Park.

Whilst Newcastle can still mathematically win the Championship title, it would take a drastic slip up from leaders Brighton & Hove Albion, who need just three points from their final two matches to confirm top spot.

However, promotion was always the aim for this season and much credit has to go to Benitez for ensuring that it was achieved in relative comfort.

The Champions League winner was only in charge for the last two months of their relegation campaign, but became a popular figure in the city and was convinced to stay on at the club despite expectations that he would depart.

Whilst many would argue that Newcastle’s expensively assembled squad virtually guaranteed promotion, others would point to the fates of Aston Villa and Norwich City, who came down with them last term, as evidence of the difficulty of adapting to life in the Championship.

The priority now will be the transfer market and Benitez will undoubtedly want to spend big again to ensure survival in the top flight.

Supporters took to social media in the aftermath of yesterday’s game to voice their delight but also to demand that owner Mike Ashley give the manager sufficient funds to mould a Premier League team.
