Newcastle United saw their poor start to the Premier League season continue on Saturday afternoon and afterwards their fans took to social media to slaughter one player in particular after a poor showing.
The Magpies were beaten 2-1 by Arsenal at St James’ Park, with Ciaran Clark’s injury time consolation goal putting a barely deserved gloss on the scoreline, but even that late strike could not hide the disappointment of the Toon supporters.
Rafael Benitez made four changes to his Newcastle side from the one which lost to Manchester City prior to the international break, but despite him saying that he would be available ahead of the game, the Spaniard chose not to play key man Jonjo Shelvey from the start, instead opting to have him on the bench.
That meant that Isaac Hayden got an outing against his former club although he did not have the best game, struggling throughout and seemingly tiring quite badly towards the end in what was a disappointing display.
The 23-year-old was featuring for the first time since he was dismissed at Cardiff City earlier in the season, and looked like a man who had been without game time for almost a month.
Hayden was far from the only poor Newcastle player on the day but when you would have expected him to be busting a gut to make up for his red card in Wales, he never gave off the impression of someone who was looking to do that and as a result Arsenal controlled the centre of the park which ultimately was the difference.
That is now one point from their opening five matches for the Magpies and their fans are rightly concerned with the situation, although when they took to social media after the game it was to vent their anger at their midfielder rather than their predicament.
Here are the pick of the Newcastle messages:
Half hearted Hayden #NUFC

That was an absolutely pathetic second half performance there, I love him, but for the first time I think Rafa got his selection and substitutions badly wrong, Hayden and Ayoze are a waste of a shirt…dross. #nufc

I’ll never understand how Joselu survived 90 minutes today. Hayden almost as bad, he could barely walk with 20 mins to go #NUFC

Never one to single out but I just have to. Thought Isaac Hayden was a a borderline disgrace today, yet again.
If a player does not want to be here, they should not be near the starting eleven. #NUFC

Isaac Hayden was an absolute disgrace! Can’t be having that Rafa. Sort it out. It’s gonna be a long season 💤

Isaac Hayden is a coward who spent the entire game hiding from the ball. Colback-esque. BUT the fact is, he shouldn’t be at the club, never mind on the pitch. We wanted rid, he wanted to leave, but we didn’t have enough squad depth to make it happen. Mike Ashley to blame #NUFC
