Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez wants to sign Everton midfielder James McCarthy this summer to bolster his squad before returning to the Premier League, according to The Daily Mail.
The Magpies will play in English football’s top flight next season after winning the Championship on the final day of the campaign.
Newcastle were linked with a move for McCarthy in the January transfer window, but Everton opted to hold onto the Republic of Ireland international.
The former Wigan Athletic man has shown he can be a devastating box-to-box man when fit and on form, but he has suffered from debilitating and recurring hamstring injuries of late.
Everton have a raft of players available in the boiler room, with the likes of Tom Davies, Morgan Schneiderlin and Idrissa Gueye among Ronald Koeman’s options.
Th report suggests that Newcastle want to revive a deal for McCarthy and could pay as much as £20 million for the impressive star.
The Irishman’s presence in the Magpies midfield would add energy and experience, while Everton would drum up some transfer expenditure by selling him.
