Newcastle United have agreed a deal to sign former-Sunderland and Liverpool defender Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid with the player due to complete a medical, according to Sky Sports.

No specific fee is mentioned but it is understood that Atleti boss Diego Simeone has deemed the Spanish full-back surplus to requirements at the Vicente Calderon, paving the way for a return to the Premier League.

Manquillo’s first experience of English football came at Liverpool, after the Reds signed the player on a two year loan deal from Athletico in August 2014. However, he failed to make an impression, managing just 10 appearances in the first year at Anfield and was subsequently sent back to Spain.

After a more enjoyable season in France at Marseille, in which he made 31 appearances, Sunderland brought him to the Stadium of Light on yet another loan deal, in August 2016.

The former Spain Under-21 international played twenty times in the previous campaign, as the Black Cats suffered relegation from the English top flight and now Magpies boss and compatriot Rafael Benitez looks set to offer the 23-year-old another chance in the North East.

Manquillo will hope for a case of ‘third-time-lucky’ in England but for Newcastle it represents their fourth successful foray into the transfer market.

Benitez has been desperate to bring in cover at full-back as he attempts to prepare his squad for the big challenge of staying in the Premier League next year.

So far the Magpies have confirmed two signings; concluding a £6.2 million permanent deal for former loanee Christian Atsu from Chelsea and an £8.7m transfer of French central defender Florian Lejeune from Spanish side Eibar.

It is understood that Benitez’s priority lies in adding to the attacking options at his disposal and a £12m agreement for Norwich City winger Jacob Murphy is on the verge of completion.

The club are still focused on bringing in a striker after missing out on a loan deal for Chelsea youngster Tammy Abraham. His team mate at Stamford Bridge Michy Batshuayi and Bordeaux forward Diego Rolan have been heavily linked with a move to St. James’ Park recently but nothing has yet materialised.

Benitez will hope that he can find a centre forward capable of supporting the prolific Dwight Gayle and consistently chipping in with goals to fire his team to Premier League safety.
