Glasgow Rangers fans got the chance to see workaholic midfield player Greg Docherty finally getting his chance to impress Steven Gerrard in a starting line-up in the pre-season friendly against Oxford.

There is no doubt that the Gers boss has significantly strengthened his midfield from the one he had last season.

Starting Team in 4-3-3 formation:

Alnwick; Polster, Katic, Edmundson, Halliday; Docherty, Kamara, Aribo; Candeias, Stewart, Hastie.

Subs: Foderingham, Tavernier (Capt), Goldson, Mayo, Barisic, Jack, Davis, Barjonas, Ojo, Jones, McPake (Defoe) – all used.

5-0 with Scorers: Candeias (16), Stewart (32), Mayo (53) Ojo (70) and Defoe (89).

Joe Aribo will be a certain starter at Rangers once he adjusts to life in Glasgow and oozed class throughout the 60 minutes he was on the park. His running with the ball and passing was of real quality.

Glen Kamara, Aribo, Docherty and Daniel Candeias held far too much firepower in the middle of the park for Oxford United to contend with.

George Edmundson and Nikola Katic were both outstanding at centre back, and the Croatian smacked a sensational 30-yard-strike that was finger-tipped on to the crossbar.

American Matt Polster and Andy Halliday looked good enough to be starters at full back, which augurs really well for this new Rangers squad.

Versatile free signing Greg Stewart led the line again and certainly didn’t disappoint anyone with this bright, clever display. Scored one, assisted one and a good passer.

Young Jake Hastie was energetic and contributed well, in a fine first half performance by Rangers.

The friendly win bodes well for Rangers with the European campaign about to start, with the squad looking hungry and fit.
