Newcastle United suffered late heartache in their 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night, but after the game the attention of the visiting fans circled on the midfielder who stood out for them in the contest.
The Magpies were comfortable for much of the outing at Molineux, and produced a consummate away performance, right up until the very last minute when they saw their hopes of a rare road win evaporate.
Rafael Benitez’s charges more than held their own in a scoreless first half against Nuno Santo Espirito’s men, and then took the lead after the break when Isaac Hayden’s shot somehow made its way past Rui Patricio in the home goal.
It looks like the Magpies would see out the match for a much needed victory, but Willy Boly broke their hearts when he converted a 95th minute cross, after Martin Dubravka made a mess of dealing with the original delivery.
On a night where Newcastle record signing Miguel Almiron came off the bench for his debut for the Tyneside outfit, it was actually young academy product Sean Longstaff who stole the show with a wonderful performance.
The Magpies playmaker learnt his trade in a loan spell away at Blackpool last season, and broke into the Toon first team on Boxing Day, when he made his debut for his home club, and he has gone from strength to strength since then.
He shone throughout the contest at Molineux, regularly offering himself and taking the ball off the Newcastle defenders and moving play on effectively and efficiently.
Football fans love watching their youth products shine on the senior stage and Magpies supporters are no different in that regard.
A huge number of them took to social media after the contest to rave about the midfielder, with many highlighting how good he was.
Here are some of those messages:
Rondon's holdup play was excellent tonight but Longstaff was immense in midfield. Well done that lad.#NUFC

Disappointing in the end, but let's hear it for Sean Longstaff. He's been some player this past month and a bit. #NUFC

Moving away from the Dubravka Debate. How mint is Longstaff? Shelvey did nothing in the first half of the season to make time think he deserves a spot ahead of this lad. #NUFC

Gutted about tonight. 2 points lost, hope it doesn't cost us. Strong performance and Longstaff looks class. Almiron lively but I doubt he will start for a while. Dubravka may have been fouled maybe should have punched but he made 3 or 4 great saves in that game too #NUFC

Plenty of positives from tonight, #nufc very good on the road, Rondon & Perez worked hard, Longstaff tidy & Ritchie looking comfortable at wingback

Longstaff feels like a new £10m+ signing, delighted he got MOTM. Heartbreaking to let in equaliser in 5th minute of a half with no injuries or hold-ups in play. Onwards and upwards #nufc

I wouldn't change Hayden and longstaff as our mf 2 no matter whose coming back from injury. #NUFC

Sean Longstaff brilliant game again tonight. Hell of a young talent, Shelvey shouldn’t even get a look in now. #NUFC

One thing about the MF you can’t see Hayden and Longstaff losing there places and with the players coming back #nufc it’s a luxury of options.
2 home games are massive now but we are not in the bottom 3 and once Almiron is settled in raw pace will add more goals.
