Aston Villa made it into the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday evening, and after the match their supporters were full of praise for a key man on the night.
The Villans made a raft of changes to their side, as Dean Smith hinted that he would ahead of the contest, given that his men faces Manchester City last weekend, and have a date with Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.
Despite the new personnel in the starting XI, Villa looked decent enough throughout the match, with the only criticism of them that they didn’t kill the match off earlier, and save themselves a nervy finish.
It looked like the Villans would dominate the cup tie when Anwar El Ghazi slotted home their opener just prior to the half an hour mark, however that wasn’t to be the case.
Patrick Cutrone levelled the scores for Wolverhampton after the break, but Villa were not to be denied a place in the last eight, a spot which was secured when Ahmed Elmohamady converted a fine ball in to beat John Ruddy, and fire the Birmingham based outfit through to the next round of the competition.
The key to the success was the two assists from Henri Lansbury, who was seeing rare first-team action for the Villans. He created both goals and also other chances for the home side, on a very positive evening for the playmaker.
Given that there are doubts over the fitness of Villa captain Jack Grealish for the upcoming clash with Liverpool, Smith could do much worse than put the former England under-21 international in against the Premier League leaders.
That was the opinion of a number of Villans fans, who took to social media to praise the performance of the 29-year-old.
