Middlesbrough were held to a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa and fans were delighted with the performance of one of their players on social media despite the result.
The draw sent Tony Pulis’ side crashing out of the play-off’s, having lost the first-leg 1-0 at The Riverside Stadium.
In truth, Boro failed to build anything substantial to challenge the Villans during the two legs, making only a handful of attempts at goal, rarely challenging Sam Johnstone.
Fans who had followed their side had been rather disappointed with the way their team had played in their two most important games of the season, however, they did manage to find the positives in one man’s performance.
Darren Randolph pleased supporters on social media with his display at Villa Park as he continued to keep Pulis’ side in the game, despite the lack of chances they were creating.
The Republic of Ireland international has been crucial to how Middlesbrough have performed this season and if it were not for him, they may not have had a realistic chance of playing Premier League football in the first place.
The 31-year-old was praised on Twitter by his own supporters for his efforts, with many feeling that he was the only player that could be proud of how he conducted himself.
A number of supporters were listing who they felt could help Boro push for promotion next season and the majority felt Randolph could still do a job at The Riverside Stadium.
Here are some of their reactions:
Dale Fry never looks out place. Great performance tonight. Should play more next season. Randolph man of the match. Clayton had good game. Shame lacked quality in front of goal. Poor season overall did well to make the playoffs. Need go up automatically next season! #UTB 🔴

Randolph. Gibson. Ayala. Clayton. Bamford. All good enough to build a Championship winning team around. Wouldn’t lose a wink of sleep over any of the others leaving. #UTB

Thought #Boro just didn’t have a go tonight. Villa Sussed them out, realised they didn’t have much then went for second goal. Only Randolph saved us from heavy defeat.
How Fabio and Bamford didn’t play a bugger part I’ll never know.

Just finished watching the match. Can’t wait for the transfer window to open because other than Randolph I’d happily see the back of ANY of our squad – we need a MAJOR rebuild if we are going to challenge next season
