Italian giants Inter Milan are willing to battle a club in China to sign Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney after identifying him as a shock summer transfer target, Calcio Mercato claim.

The 31-year-old has seen his playing chances diminish significantly under new manager Jose Mourinho and has reportedly been told by the club to look elsewhere if he wants regular first-team football.

However, former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is said to also be interested in signing Rooney for his current side Shanghai International Port Group F.C in China in a big money-move.

The England international has won everything he can with the Red Devils, including five Premier League titles and one Champions League.

The United skipper has made 344 league appearances and has scored 179 goals in the English top division for the Old Trafford club.

He is currently four goals away from beating Sir Bobby Charlton’s 249 goals for the club in all competitions and has stated he is not willing to leave until he breaks the record.
