Manchester City star Sergio Aguero has always claimed that he would like to finish his career at Independiente, the Argentinian club where it all began for him.
The Argentina international has suggested that he will head back to his home land when his current contract runs out at the Etihad Stadium. That is not until 2020, but it is not something fans of the Premier League leaders will want to hear.
The 29-year-old striker made a name for himself at Independiente, where his 23 goals in 56 appearances earned him a huge money move to Atletico Madrid in La Liga.
After five years there he moved to City in 2011, where he has already broken the all-time goalscoring record and will improve significantly on that over the next two seasons, should he stay fit.
Aguero is currently away on international duty with Argentina, where he is preparing to take on Spain on Tuesday evening, but he has once again reiterated that he intends to complete the full circle of his career.
“I always said that I would like to return to Independiente when my contract ends with City, which is in 2020.†Sky Sports quotes him as telling Fox Sports Argentina.
“I am not thinking about that now. I am focused on finishing the season well and reaching the World Cup.”
Although the end of Aguero’s contract is two years away, City fans will be concerned at the possibility of him leaving, when at 31 there would still be plenty of life left in the striker.
They would not just be losing a top level forward, but other than Gabriel Jesus, the options to replace the Argentine would not be immediately obvious.
City have all the money to spend that they need, but finding someone who scares defences and has the goalscoring record that Aguero has will not be easy, so it will be interesting to see if Pep Guardiola can lure the attacker into signing another contract.
