Manchester United will be without captain and attacking talisman Wayne Rooney for the clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, according to Sky Sports.

The England international is said to have picked up a muscular injury and did not travel with the rest of the Red Devils squad to London on Saturday.

Rooney’s role in the United side has been a hot topic for debate in recent weeks, with the former Everton prodigy dropped to the bench by Jose Mourinho after a spate of poor performances.

This has led to speculation over the 30-year-old’s future at Old Trafford, with the veteran seemingly set to play a fringe role at the Premier League club this season.

Rooney has also been dropped by England in recent times, with a frustrating injury the latest setback for the Aintree-born star.

Mourinho is likely to field Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in his attack at Stamford Bridge.
