Manchester United have confirmed on their official website that defender Chris Smalling has agreed a new contract to stay with the Red Devils until June 2022.
The England international centre-half joined the Old Trafford outfit as a youngster from Fulham and has been a important player for the club over the years.
While many pundits are unconvinced by Jose Mourinho’s options at centre-half and speculation is rife that United want a new defender in the January transfer window, Smalling plays for the Red Devils more often than not.
The Manchester outfit also have the likes of Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly to select from in the position, but Smalling commands respect and is a player Mourinho picks when he is available.
United have had an underwhelming campaign so far this season and have ground to make up on the top four as the busy Christmas fixture list approaches.
The Red Devils have the daunting task of facing Liverpool at Anfield later today, with the travelling fans hoping to get one over their age-old rivals.
