Over the course of the summer, it was looking increasingly likely that Chelsea were set to cut their losses on Diego Costa and send him back to Atletico Madrid.

However, for one reason or another, the Spain international centre forward has stayed at Stamford Bridge and has looked back to his best for the Blues in 2016-17.

At times last season Costa struggled to make an impact in a team that collectively was short of confidence but the same cannot be said this season.

The Brazil-born attacker has been back to his menacing best and his goal against Hull City in Saturday’s 2-0 win helped to get the London club back on track.

It may well have been easy for Chelsea to have opted to play Michy Batshuayi this season or to splurge on another star striker, such as former charge Romelu Lukaku.

But, the club’s faith in Costa could well be the thing that fires the Blues back into contention for the Premier League title in 2016-17.

Plenty of other prestigious centre forwards, such as Andriy Shevechenko and Fernando Torres to name but two, have struggled to live up to their billing at Chelsea.

However, Costa has all the attributes and the attitude to score consistently for the club – which could play a telling difference in the side’s chances come May.
