Reported Tottenham Hotspur summer transfer target Nicolo Zaniolo has signed a new contract with Roma, as reported by the club’s official website.
The new deal will keep him on the books of the Serie A outfit until the summer of 2024.
Zaniolo was strongly linked with a move to Tottenham during the summer transfer window as the North London club looked to strengthen their first-team squad.
The Italian midfielder fits the perfect profile of a Mauricio Pochettino signing and there is no doubt that he had the potential to shine at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
However, a deal did not end up materialising and Spurs added Tanguy Ndombele to their midfield ranks instead.
Zaniolo is one of the brightest young prospects in the Serie A and managed 36 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring six goals.
Most players his age are still working their way into first-team football but he has managed to already establish himself as a first-team regular for his club despite his tender age.
The 20-year-old’s performances last season saw him win inclusion to the Italian national team and he currently has two international caps to his name. He will be in contention to potentially don the jersey of his country during the European Championships next year.
Zaniolo may want to spend many years at Roma as he probably has a strong connection with the club.
“A year ago it was an easy decision to choose Roma, and today it is even easier – after a season that helped me fall in love with this team and this city,” Zaniolo told the club’s official website.
“I would like to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to tie myself even more closer to these colours – it is exactly what I wanted.”
For Tottenham, the captures of Ndombele, Jack Clarke, Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon represents a successful transfer window – especially as Spurs did not sign anyone in the two windows prior.
