Arsenal successfully turned around their Europa League tie against Rennes at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday evening, and after the match the discussion on social media was all about their star striker.
The Gunners went into the second leg trailing 3-1 from a poor night at the office in France last week, but they had soon turned things on its head and eventually ran out comfortable winners, to secure their spot in Friday’s draw.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery has a good record in the Europa League but after the loss in Rennes, it looked like that could have been dented, but his players didn’t read that script as they powered into the quarter finals.
It took just five minutes for the Gunners to make inroads into their deficit, as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang tapped home from close range. He then turned provider as the home side took the lead in the tie, when Ainsley Maitland-Niles headed home on the quarter hour mark.
That meant that Arsenal were ahead on the away goals rule, but the Gabon international ensured that they would not need to rely on that method of victory when he found the back of the net for a second time late on, to put the Londoners through 4-3 on aggregate.
Aubameyang has gone from zero to hero over the last week or so. His low point came in the North London Derby when he missed a late penalty against Tottenham Hotspur to give the Gunners a win in that match, but he has been superb since then.
Arsenal have overcome Manchester United and Rennes in quick succession, and the striker has been a key man in both matches.
Gunners fans are well aware of that fact, with many commenting on his form in recent times, as well as his excellent performance against the French outfit, when reacting to the win on social media after the full time whistle.
Here are some of their messages:
Best five days of Arsenal's season, I would say. Real sense of momentum building now in both Europe and the Premier League. Balanced at the back and dangerous going forward. Maitland-Niles brilliant again, Koscielny a mountain, Aubameyang ruthless #AFC

Aubameyang involved in all 3 goals 🤭. Also missed 2 sitters 😂. Very crucial game! Look how lethal Arsenal have been up front since starting with 2 strikers (finally!!). Very few clubs have scored more goals in all comps. Now fix the Defense ffs #AFC

That goal on Sunday certainly seems to have boosted Aubameyang's morale and I'm so glad Laca let him have this. I'm honoured to be a fan of this team #afc
