Liverpool overcame Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16 inside the Allianz Arena on Wednesday evening, and after the match fans were quick to praise a star man in the victory.
The Reds headed to the German giants with it all to do in the second leg, after failing to break the deadlock back at Anfield three weeks ago. They knew defeat would see them become potentially the only British thing to exit Europe this month.
The odds looked to be stacked against Liverpool with Bayern going into the contest in such good form, but after a nervy beginning to the game for both sides, it was the Merseyside outfit who took the lead.
Sadio Mane conducted an outrageous piece of skill and applied the finish to put the Reds 1-0 up in the first half, and left the hosts needing to score twice to progress.
They were helped out in that quest before half time however, as Liverpool defender Joel Matip put into his own net to level the scores, but after the break Jurgen Klopp’s men seized control.
Virgil van Dijk delivered another valuable goal to put the Reds 2-1 up on the night, and then Mane made sure they would join English counterparts Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Manchester City in Friday’s quarter final draw.
The forward was immense for Liverpool on the evening, not just bagging two important strikes, but also working tirelessly in attack and defence, as well as keeping possession when his side needed it.
The display continued the wonderful form that the Senegal international has been in for the Reds in recent times, a feat which was acknowledged by their fans on social media after the match.
They know how much Liverpool have been indebted to Mane recently, and were quick to praise him once again once the full time whistle had sounded.
Here are some of their messages:
A Mane late goal is becoming a trend… A good omen for final day madness? 🤔 #LFC

Just Wow! Incredible by Liverpool, first 20 mins looked like one of those nights but this team has matured under Klopp & Van Dijk. Controlled, Clinical & Brave. Mane at his best, Never ignore Salah's runs. Lucky Man City might have Dejavu moment. #BAYLIV #LFC #UCL

Sadio Mane flitting past the opposition challenges was so gratifying, at the same time accentuating his assertiveness on the ball even when being confronted by the defending elite.Another one of those historic nights propelling this behemoth of club back to where it belongs. #LFC

Now I understand why Mane wanted the number 10 jersey #LFC

Supreme team performance. Crowned by Sadio Mané who is up there with the world’s best right now. Cue the pundits who will now say that Bayern are on the downswing although they are top of the Bunsesliga and thrashed Augsburg 6-0 on the weekend. #LFC

Teams are doubling up on Salah and leaving Mane free. Do that at your peril. Mane is now 1 goal away from being our top scorer this season. We've got more than 1 threat you know. #LFC

I love this new version of Sadio Mané. Taking his responsibility when needed most and clinical in front of goal. He maybe inconsistent at times but on his day he's a world class player. Liverpool's best striker this season. #LFC
