Pundit Micky Quinn has stated that Liverpool signing Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk could be the catalyst to lead the Reds to the Premier League title this season.

The Anfield outfit have come out of the blocks quickly, with their blistering attacking trio of Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino firing on all cylinders.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s side still do not look convincing at the back, with the Merseysiders only keeping two Premier League clean sheets so far in 2016-17.

The enigmatic German coach has fielded Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip at the heart of his rearguard this season, but Quinn feels moving for Van Dijk could well be the final piece of the Reds’ jigsaw.

“I think he could be the missing link for Liverpool in regards to winning the Premier League,” he told talkSPORT.

“I think if they sign him – you’ve seen him at Celtic, you’ve seen him at Southampton – he’s a football player, an aggressive centre-back.

“He just goes from strength to strength every game I see him. I think he would be a great signing for Liverpool if money’s no object.

“I could see them winning the Premier League if they sign him.”

Liverpool and Southampton went head-to-head in the Premier League at the weekend, with the Netherlands international putting in another impressive performance.

The Reds have been linked with a move for the Dutch enforcer in recent days, but the Saints would surely be reluctant to let their centre-half leave St Mary’s – especially mid-season.
