Liverpool icon Phil Thompson has stated that Reds star Philippe Coutinho is good enough to play for Spanish giants Barcelona or Real Madrid.

The former captain’s comments came prior to another masterclass from the midfield magician, who provided two assists as the Merseysiders beat Crystal Palace 4-2 at Selhurst Park in Saturday’s evening kick-off.

“He could play and you could see him fitting in the Barcelona or Real Madrid team,” Thompson told Sky Sports.

“He has become that big star and of course once you start getting something, you do hear that all the big Spanish clubs will be chasing him, so his agent has been working extra hard in the last couple of weeks.”

It is certainly difficult to argue with the 62-year-old’s views, as Coutinho has been in sparkling form all season for the Anfield side.

The Brazilian now has four goals and four assists from just ten Premier League matches as Liverpool sit third in the table, level on points with both Manchester City and Arsenal.

With such dazzling displays it is little surprise that the playmaker is being linked with the biggest clubs in world football, but manager Jurgen Klopp will be keen for his talisman to stay put.

Fans of the Reds will be buoyed by an interview that the Brazilian gave to the Liverpool Echo earlier this month, in which he stated that he is “happy, settled and comfortable here with the city and the people”.

However, things can change very quickly in football and if one of the Spanish superpowers do come calling, it may be an offer that Coutinho just cannot refuse.

  1. Why does this always happen? Liverpool are a huge club. Why speculate on our players moving? The Spanish League is much easier to win than the Premiership. Why move to an inferior League?

  2. Yer shut up tommo he will stay.Liverpool need to offer him a better contract cause he’s are best player and there’s other players who are on better money than coutinio
