Liverpool recorded a plucky 2-1 win over Premier League rivals Chelsea on Friday night, with goals from Dejan Lovren and Jordan Henderson giving the Reds an invaluable three points at Stamford Bridge.

The attacking prowess of Jurgen Klopp’s side has been painstakingly apparent in the early days of the 2016-17 campaign, but it appears that a defensive summer signing is making a big impression with the Anfield fans also.

Joel Matip put in an assured performance at the heart of the visiting side’s rearguard and has looked like a confident and able defender in the early days of his Liverpool career.

Signed from Schalke over the summer on a free transfer, the Cameroon international largely nullified the threat of Diego Costa in West London.

Matip must harbour some blame for the Chelsea goal, given that he slid in on Nemanja Matic when staying on his feet would have been a better option, but all-in-all the African enforcer looked mightily impressive.

Liverpool’s fans have taken to Twitter to share their admiration for the 25-year-old, with the best tweets below.
