Liverpool are set to go head-to-head with a host of top English clubs as they bid to sign Fulham’s 16-year-old midfielder Matt O’Riley, according to The Sun.

The Reds are just one of the sides said to be pursuing the England under-16 international, who has also represented Denmark at the same level.

O’Riley has been playing with his club’s under-18 team this season and has turned in a series of eye-catching performances from central midfield.

He has been likened to Italy legend Andrea Pirlo in terms of playing style and is widely recognised for his technical ability, something all too rare in English academy prospects.

Standing at over six feet tall, O’Riley also has a considerable physical presence and is viewed as a real talent for the future.

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic is keen to keep hold of his young prodigy as he aims to build a side capable of returning the club to the Premier League.

The South Londoners have recently bought a number of high-quality youth players through their system and will be hoping that O’Riley does not go the same way as Moussa Dembele, who left for Celtic on a free over the summer.

However, it may be that the lure of Premier League football proves too strong for the youngster, who is expected to command a fee in excess of £1 million should he leave the Cottagers.
