Barcelona attacker Lionel Messi has set a new record in this season’s Champions League, becoming the all-time top goalscorer in the group stages of the venerable European competition.
As can be seen below, the Argentina international has surpassed former Real Madrid forward Raul as the tournament’s most-prolific marksman in the pool stages.

Messi has hit seven goals so far in three games, including hat-tricks against Manchester City and Celtic at Camp Nou.
The South American has looked back to his best after returning from injury, with the current Ballon d’Or holder the hot favourite to retain the personal accolade in the new year.
Messi recently scored his 500th goal for Barcelona in all competitions and has proven over time that he can deliver when it matters for the Catalan powerhouses.
With 54 Champions League group stage goals, the Argentine will seemingly set the bar even higher with two more games against Borussia Monchengladbach and Celtic still to play this season.
