Leeds United beat Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend to leave themselves sitting fourth in the Championship with only eight games remaining.

Despite securing a vital 2-0 win, one of the main talking points was the omission of star defender Pontus Jansson from the Whites’ starting XI, with the Swede taking to Twitter more than 24 hours after the match to congratulate his team-mates on a fine result in his absence.

Jansson has been one of the club’s most consistent performers this term and the decision to drop him for such a crucial game was puzzling to say the least, but manager Garry Monk’s gamble paid off with another solid team display.

The centre-back, who will sign permanently from Torino over the summer, was on the bench for Saturday’s clash, which would appear to rule out injury as the reason that he was not selected.

Monk has rotated his side in recent weeks due to fixture congestion and may point to this as a further example of his faith in the squad as a whole, rather than in stand-out individuals.

Whilst there is no immediate cause for concern regarding Jansson’s future, supporters will no doubt be keeping an eye on the team sheet when Leeds travel to Reading on April 1 to see whether his name is included.

The 26-year-old’s tweet on Sunday night prompted a flurry of responses from fans; the best of the reaction can be found below:
