Leeds United are closing in on securing Kalvin Phillips to a new long-term deal, according to a report published by Teamtalk.
The Whites player has been strongly linked with a move to Aston Villa who are preparing for life in the Premier League next season after having won the promotion playoff final against Derby County.
The report added that the new Leeds contract would see Phillips become one of the Whites’ top earners.
The 23-year-old is currently one of the Elland Road outfit’s most-important players and his departure could stand to affect the core of the side more than the departure of any other player.
He made 44 Championship appearances last season for Leeds and went on to score one goal as well as record three assists in the second-tier.
As an academy graduate of the Yorkshire giants, Phillips may feel that he at least help the team to win Premier League status before leaving for another club.
Leeds have so far had a fairly quiet transfer window. They have parted ways with Pontus Jansson who has joined Brentford, while the likes of Jack Harrison and Helder Costa have arrived.
However, securing Phillips to a new deal amid Premier League interest would be a big boost for the club and rekindle belief among the fans that promotion is possible in 2019-20.
