Leeds United might have hit a stumbling block in their bid to get Vurnon Anita off their wage bill this summer, according to Greek media outfit Sdna.Gr.
The Whites midfielder has been told he is free to find another club, and was rumoured to be all set to sign for Panathinaikos out in Greece, although there could be a snag in his departure.
The Leeds utility man is said to be on a big wage at Elland Road, one which is out of reach of the Greek outfit, and that is holding up the exit for the Netherlands international.
Marcelo Bielsa is looking to shape his Whites squad ahead of another tilt at a return to the Premier League, but having sent Anita out on loan to Willem II last term, there is no space for him in Yorkshire this season.
It was believed that the 30-year-old was going to buy himself out of his present Leeds deal, which runs for another year, but his wages are proving to be a real issue, with Panathinaikos unable to match what he currently receives at Elland Road.
Given that the Whites want Anita away from the club to free up a space for another signing, something is going to have to give, and it appears that Leeds are going to help finance a switch by paying some of the shortfall.
The Dutchman never really got going in his time with the Whites, where a constant change in manager never helped matters, but since Bielsa has arrived at Elland Road there has been no place for the former Newcastle United midfielder.
Talks between Leeds and Panathinaikos are expected to continue, but given the desire to offload their man, the Yorkshire outfit are expected to come to an agreement that allows Anita to head to Greece.
