Leeds United supporters have been reacting on Twitter to a story in The Mirror claiming that Middlesbrough are looking to hijack their move for Norwich City’s Jonny Howson.

The 29-year-old had been linked with the Whites whilst Garry Monk was still manager, five-and-a-half years after departing the Yorkshire giants.

The ex-Swansea City boss has since taken the reigns at the Riverside Stadium and is still seemingly interested in securing Howson’s services for his new club.

Boro are said to be prepared to meet Norwich’s asking price of £5 million just a matter of months after their relegation from the Premier League.

As for the Canaries, they are willing to sell Howson to raise funds for new arrivals in the coming months after having their budget cut.

The central midfielder started his career at Elland Road, making his debut in September 2006 and going on to feature over 200 times for his boyhood side over the next five years.

He was named Leeds captain prior to the start of the 2011-2012 campaign but after a decent opening few months of the season, when the team looked set for a play-off push, he suffered a knee injury against Millwall and would not play for the club again.

Howson’s move to Norwich has proven successful but he is understood to want a return to the north of England.

The news of Boro’s interest has sparked a reaction from Leeds fans, largely due to Monk’s involvement in the potential deal.

The best of the Twitter responses can be found below:

  1. Give it a rest with this you lazy journalists … and the Leeds fans who keep hankering for past players to be brought back. Reading the above tweets, it’s clear that there’s more than me who DON’T WANT HIM BACK, THANK YOU.

  2. Utter insanity why do so many supporters want Howson even more so because of Monks interesting – Howson is a championship player we want better – Shelvey , Cairney, Mooy are all Premiership players – we have enough average players here that need off-loading – Bridcutt, Murphy , Dallas and OKane all these are not good enough and WHY add another to the mix – get the deals done on Alioski and Saiz , go for Pasalic, Loftus-Cheek , Baker or Adelaide on loan and if we want an older head get Charlie Adam or Snodgrass – Howson to Boro music to my ears to be honest

  3. Leeds have not bid for Howson, so we can assume the club do not want him!
Norwich say they have had a bid from Middlesborough, which they turned down – so far!!
We can do better with £5 million.
I like Howson as a player but I don’t see how we could fit him in.
    We have Ronaldo!

  4. Seems like there’s a lot of bitter and twisted LUFC fans on here who want to vent their stress on other clubs who are only doing what every club does to others, including Leeds… Middlesbrough, Burnley, Huddersfield why are they the bad boys all of a sudden? Face up to it and stop living in the past… You’re an average club in the Championship… There’s no disgrace in that. You have a great club and it would be good to see you back in the Premiership but stop all the moaning and groaning. Monk went because your club couldn’t match his ambition, he would still be with you if your chairman didn’t mess it up! Lets hope your chairman can deliver what your manager requires to at least compete this season….

    • I think it is just the time of year Ian.
False news to get fans arguing over nothing!!
We have been an average club for 15 years or more, but now we have an owner who wants to succeed.
Boro have been blessed with the best owner in any league, and he has poured millions into the club, without much result – sadly.
We have been living on crumbs, having to settle for loanees and freebees.
It was obvious that the owner did not rate Gary Monk, even though he had our full support, along with his assistant Pep!!
The owner saw last season as poor overall – which it was.
Because we were so loyal to the manager, in spite of the seasons collapse, we were upset that he left.
      The Chairman was not!!
We fully support the Chairman, and his decisions.
Only time will tell as to how we do, but we start this season with a lot of hope.
We are all just fans, no better or worse than any other club’s.

Good luck to all of us, and enjoy the season!!

    • I don’t think so Ian, Monk was not good for LUFC and i have said it all season, the games were sh1t, and boring, and he think he left because he could not match the new owners ambitions, also the chairman did not beg him to stay. the Jordis can have him well come to boring football.

      • The majority of fans seem to be disappointed that he left… We are not privy to what was or wasn’t offered to him. He seems like a straight forward guy. At the end of the day if he wasn’t happy why would he stay? I don’t think the vacant Boro job influenced his decision either. He could have just as easily have gone to Sunderland or even Crystal Palace…

  5. Why do we want Howson back just because he wants to come back, and at 5m when they only paid 2m for him and he was in his prime, we did not get up into the prem when he was here the last time so what makes you think he can do it now, im’e tired of payers walking away so they can join the prem only to end up back in the championship, then when it does not work out for them Oh ill’e go back to leeds if it does not work out, well i for one don’t want him back made his bed and all that, players are for five minutes, Supporters are here for life, move on.
