Leeds United have confirmed that Luke Ayling will miss the rest of the season following an ankle injury and fans have taken to Twitter to provide their reactions to the blow.
The defender had to leave the match against Nottingham Forest on New Year’s Day following a challenge from Liam Bridcutt and the club have revealed it is more serious than first thought.
It was believed that Ayling would only miss a small amount of action, however, scans showed that the 26-year-old would require surgery, making him unavailable for Leeds.
The blow will be devastating to Thomas Christiansen’s side, with his team currently sitting sixth in the Championship as they look to get back to the Premier League.
Ayling has been vital to the Elland Road line-up in the past couple of seasons, and now the Whites will need to turn their attention to finding someone during the January transfer window, although the arrival of Laurens de Bock could allow for Gaetano Berardi to switch flanks.
The news has come at the same time as key man Samuel Saiz is set to start a six-game suspension following his red card during their shock defeat in last weekend’s FA Cup clash with Newport County at Rodney Parade.
Leeds fans took to social media to share their thoughts on the defender’s season-ending injury, with many of the same opinions.
The Elland Eoad faithful are devastated with the news that the player will no longer have an impact in their push for the Premier League, with some suggesting that it could also be the end of the club’s campaign.
Here are some of the Leeds supporters’ reactions from Twitter:
Ayling massive loss for Leeds, think Coyle is ready for a run in team though #lufc

Ayling out for the rest of the season and Saiz out for 6 games = no promotion or PO, sadly. Unless we do some serious investmest, but can't see that happening 🙁 #lufc
