Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Pires has revealed that Newcastle United made an approach for his services during the recent January transfer window.

The 23-year-old is currently plying his trade with Leganes in Spain’s La Liga, having won promotion with them on loan from Juventus during the last campaign.

“Yes, I think it was true,” Gabriel said when asked about the Newcastle rumour in an interview with Spanish publication El Economista.

“But it’s gone and now I think of here, where I am and where I am going to be.”

The attacking midfielder, who signed permanently for Leganes in June 2016, has impressed sporadically for the minnows during their difficult debut season in the top flight.

He has two goals and an assist to his name in the league as his side sit 17th in the table, just two points above the relegation zone.

Gabriel moved to Europe from his native Brazil in 2012 at the tender age of 18, joining Juventus in a transfer which also included his older brother Guilherme.

However, he failed to make an appearance for The Old Lady at senior level, instead spending most of his four years with the club out on loan at various Italian outfits before eventually signing a season-long deal with Leganes in the summer of 2015.

Whether Newcastle still harbour an interest in Gabriel is unknown and his future may ultimately be decided by where his current team finish this term.
