Everton are closing in on the free transfer signing of former Southampton defender Cuco Martina, according to The Sun.
The Toffees are in the market for right-back cover this summer as Seamus Coleman continues the long road back to fitness after a harrowing leg break in March.
Martina was in and out of the Southampton side in 2016-17 but was released by the south coast Premier League outfit recently after his contract at the St Mary’s Stadium expired.
Everton have played Mason Holgate at right-back since Coleman’s injury but the youngster is more suited to a centre-half role and Koeman seemingly wants extra cover.
Given that Martina is available on a free transfer and has Premier League experience, it could well be a shrewd move by Koeman and the Goodison Park club.
Everton are expected to try and do their transfer business early in the window and the Curacao international joining could be the first of a number of quick-fire deals.
The Toffees are expected to sign at least one centre-half this summer, a goalkeeper and a number of attacking players, with Koeman admitting that he would like to add players that can contribute goals to his squad.
