Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is understood to be weighing up a bid for Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles this summer as he looks to strengthen his squad for next season according to a report in The Sun.
The 23-year-old has been a pivotal member of Rafa Benitez’s side this term as they navigated their way out of relegation trouble to maintain their Premier League status for another season.
Despite spending a world-record £75million on defender Virgil van Dijk in January Klopp still wants to strengthen the Reds backline and has earmarked the England under-21 international as a potential target.
While there has been undoubted improvement in the Liverpool defensive unit with the addition of the Dutchman there have been issues with squad depth at the club as the season has gone on and the German is looking at remedying this as the Reds seek their Holy Grail of winning the Premier League.
Dejan Lovren has been excellent alongside van Dijk at the heart of the Reds rearguard but there are still question marks surrounding the Croatian and his central defensive teammates Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan.
Klopp is also looking at other targets including Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski who has had a superb season marshalling Sean Dyche’s side which earned him a call-up to the England set-up and ultimately a place in his country’s 23-man squad for the World Cup in Russia in June.
Both players will not come cheap and it is expected that neither will leave their clubs for less than £25million but both fit the mould of what the Liverpool boss is looking for.
In the meantime though, the Merseysiders have the small matter of a Champions League Final against Real Madrid on Saturday night in Kiev to look forward to and any transfer moves will not happen until after the big game.
