Celtic legend John Hartson has claimed that the club allowed Moussa Dembele to leave because they had Odsonne Edouard, and that he would go for as much as him if he was sold soon.
The Bhoys have been in a good position when it comes to forwards in recent times. Although he has had his issues away from the pitch over the last season or so, they have had Leigh Griffiths as well as the two Frenchmen.
Dembele had an excellent record for Celtic, a career at Celtic Park which saw him leave for Lyon for just under £20 million after bagging 51 times in 94 appearances in all competitions for the Glasgow giants.
Hartson believes the reason the 23-year-old was allowed to leave the Bhoys is because they already had a move for Edouard lined up, and has suggested that he is as good as the man he replaced.
“You look at Moussa Dembele going for £20 million” the Scottish Sun quote him as saying.
“Edouard is younger and a France Under-21 player. He’s got the world at his feet. He will keep improving. I think he’s on a long-term contract so Celtic won’t be too worried. The offers will come in and then it’s up to the club.
“One of the reasons Dembele moved on was because they had Odsonne Edouard waiting in the wings.
“He’s certainly in the same bracket as Dembele if Celtic consider selling him.
“Edouard’s got the world at his feet and he’ll get better and better. He wouldn’t go cheap, that’s for sure.”
Edouard already has 47 goals in 105 matches for Celtic, and has attracted the attention of a lot of big clubs, including ones from the Premier League and Serie A, meaning the Glasgow outfit might have to remain strong in January if they are to keep him.
